right now the house is considering a continuing resolution, carl was just talking about it, to keep the government running for two more weeks. last hour house republican peter roskum told us if senate democrats walk away from the house resolution it will show they are actively engineering a government shut down. listen. i think the house republicans have acted forthrightly and clearly following up on what the american public said last november and that was that we needed to save in order to create jobs in this country. there was a continuing resolution that was passed that cut $61 billion off of last year s number. we are poised to act this afternoon, do the same thing on a short term basis. now the senate has two opportunities to deal with that. so far they ve given it lip-service, but my suggestion is if they walk away from both of those resolutions and say neither one of them is good enough, then i believe they are actively engineering a government shut down and the public doesn t
fight over how much to cut from the rest of this year s budget not to mention next year s $3.7 trillion spending plan. jenna: lawmakers have three days left to rereach the agreement or the government could shut down. they will likely massa temporary continuing resolution later today. senate democrats will have to go along. that is still a big question mark if we are going to avoid the shut down. let s talk to bob casey. he s the chairman of the joint committee. nice to have you back with us, sir. nice to be with you. jenna: are we any closer to a deal here. i think we are. i think we ll get through this week and be able to come to a conclusion about the short term, the next couple of weeks. it will get harder beyond this. we have to continue to sit down and work together and negotiate so that we can get through this budget year. a lot of people don t realize we are still working on the 2011 budget, which as you might know is 40 billion less right now. we are spending $40 billion
she s reports were coming out back in 2001, but he argues, in the context of the keeping the government open and avoiding a shut down and cutting spending and stopping the excessive borrowing that the government has been involved in with a 14 trillion-dollar debt, it s an opportunity to do serious cutting. listen to this. we ve said enough is enough. our congress is about delivering results. we are going to continue to try and get our fiscal house in order, taking the first step this week with the cr, and the reduction in spending that the speaker caulked about. reporter: the cr they are talking about is the continuing resolution or stop gap measure designed to keep the government open on friday night after the current spending is expected to expire without some legislative action. republicans want to cut some $4 billion. democrats take a look at this gao report which shows hundreds and hundreds of duplicative reports and is estimated to have about $200 billion in waste that could
jenna: a short term continuing resolution bill expected to house in the today, that agreement extends government funding for the next two weeks so congress with work on compromise been the bill. our next guest says if senate democrats walk away from this offer they re actively engineering a government shutdown. joining me now is a member of the republican leadership, congressman peter rothscam. why do you say that? i think it s true. i think the house presidents acted forth rightly and clearly following up on what the american public said last november, that means we need to save in order to create jobs in this country and there was a continuing resolution passed to cut $61 billion off of last year s number and now we re poised to act this afternoon, do the same thing on a short term basis, and now the senate has two
fiscal year. jim angle is keeping an eye on all of this, live from washington. where are we in the process now, jim? reporter jon, the house will pass a 2-week extension spending authority today called a continuing resolution or c.r., that will happen this after that and they ll send it to the senate. this particular bill would only cut $4 billion. that s two weeks worth of the 61 billion house republicans want to cut between now and october. some democrats are critical even of that amount, even though all of the cuts in there are things president obama has proposed. now, cutting putting that cutting that puts house democrats in a tricky position. listen: i would probably vote in favor of it, even though i have severe questions about t nobody wants to shut down government. but in the at the same token, i don t want to see this death by a thousand splashes. reporter: so there you have it. there are some misgivings on the house side, there are
