Its part of a proposed shakeup to iowas mandatory minimum sentencing laws. Steve kccis ryan smith is live in the newsroom to show us why the county Attorney Says this a Public Safety concern. Ryan the proposal would cut mandatory sentences for some violent felonies including kidnapping, attempted murder, and seconddegree murder. We have to be protected from violent criminals. Ryan strong words from the attorney, reacting to a house file 2171. The bill would slash the states mandatory sentence of 70 timeserved to 30 . For example a seconddegree murder conviction carries a 50 year sentence, 35 years mandatory. If passed, and if and it could are we best served by keeping the mayor, taking up a bed, better to maybe put more money into community corrections.
