A severe rainstorm in 2021 caused massive washouts on the road leading up to Mary Ann Falls in northern Cape Breton. Parks Canada announced the road is now permanently closed to traffic and will be rebuilt for hikers and mountain bikers.
Parks Canada says visitor numbers are just seven per cent shy of pre-pandemic levels. Staff are hopeful the strong turnout will continue into the fall.
Just months after tourism officials in Cape Breton encouraged people to get out and explore waterfalls, the popular Mary-Ann Falls site remains closed with no set date for reopening.
