Haaland Confirmed as First Indigenous Secretary of the Interior   WASHINGTON, DC, March 15, 2021 (ENS) – History was made today as the U.S. Senate voted 51-40 to confirm President Joe Biden’s nominee Congresswoman Debra Haaland as Secretary of the Interior. After she is sworn in, Haaland will be the first Native American to serve as a Cabinet secretary. In 2018, she became one of the first two Native women elected to Congress. Serving as the U.S. Representative for New Mexico’s 1st congressional district since 2019, Haaland is a member of the Laguna Pueblo, a federally recognized tribe of Native American Pueblo people in west-central New Mexico, near the city of Albuquerque.

AZTEC The New Mexico Public Regulation Commission will discuss the potential impact of the extreme winter storm that reached New Mexico over Valentine’s Day weekend and cut off power to millions of customers in Texas. During a PRC meeting on Feb. 24, several PRC-regulated utilities including New Mexico Gas Company and Public Service Company of New Mexico discussed the impact that the storm had on their operations. These impacts included raising the cost of power and natural gas purchased from the market, which in turn may lead to increases in customer bills. The New Mexico attorney general has announced an investigation into the spiking prices.

Colorado-based business accelerator program expands into San Juan County

FARMINGTON San Juan County entrepreneurs or companies hoping to set up shop in the area have a new option for finding mentors, technical assistance and funding. The Southwest Colorado Accelerator Program for Entrepreneurs is partnering with San Juan College, San Juan County, the City of Farmington and Four Corners Economic Development in hopes of jumpstarting the area’s economy entering 2021. SCAPE is a Durango, Colorado, based organization focused on helping new businesses. To date, SCAPE s helped businesses raise over $24 million and helped create 152 jobs, per a press release from San Juan College. The partnership marks the expansion of SCAPE s efforts into New Mexico.
