Jan. 8 Nearly 300 full-service restaurants received a slice of $7.5 million in CARES Act funding as part of a county program that reimbursed them for extending a 30 percent discount to diners. About 60 percent of 485 eligible full-service restaurants, open prior to March 23, 2020, participated. Jan. 8 The Washington state Department of Health reported 3,353 new cases of COVID-19 and 29 deaths Thursday. Pierce County reported 302 cases Thursday and one new death. Pierce County has a total of 322 deaths likely caused by COVID-19 as of Thursday, according to the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department. Statewide totals from the illness caused by the coronavirus are 264,012 cases and 3,634 deaths. The case total includes 10,611 cases listed as probable. Those numbers are up from 260,659 cases and 3,605 deaths on Tuesday. DOH revises previous case and death counts daily.

Proposal to disband Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department fails after stunning split vote Pierce Co Counsel does not pass ordinance to disband health department PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. - Tuesday night s Pierce County Council meeting came to a shocking conclusion after a tense and emotional seven hours primarily discussing the council s move to disband the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department.  The ordinance did not pass after a split 3-3 vote. The councilmember who tipped that way was none other than the ordinance sponsor herself, Pam Roach.  Her no vote was clearly shocking to other council members who were heard saying, Wait, what . What s happening? after Roach voted in opposition of the very ordinance she sponsored.
