A stunning reversal took place in Pierce County Tuesday night, after the sponsor of a measure seeking to reorganize the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department voted against her own bill.
The bill was first drafted by County Councilmember Doug Richardson, who later took his name off of it, leaving fellow Republican Councilmember Pam Roach as the sole remaining sponsor. In its original form, it would have ended the 38-year-old interlocal agreement that forms the backbone of the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department, and place the it under the control of elected local leaders.

The Tacoma-Pierce County Public Health Department will not be dissolved, after the Pierce County Council failed to pass an proposal that would have broken up the long term public health partnership and allowed the county to take over that department s duties.
The Pierce County Council had considered dissolving the agreement that forms the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department, a local partnership that makes public health decisions independently from the county.

The ordinance did not pass after a split 3-3 vote. The councilmember who tipped that way was none other than the ordinance sponsor herself, Pam Roach.
