Confirmation takes a simple majority, 51 votes. However, any senator can demand a higher threshold, supermajority of 60 votes. Today citing all the times the republicans have used that 60vote hurdle to block president ial nominees, the senate voted to take it off the table for all but Supreme Court nominees.
