Whether you’re a BU grad or a proud Terrier parent, family member, or friend, there are many ways to get in the Commencement spirit virtually this year. And that’s never been more important than this year, when families and friends cannot be with graduating seniors on Nickerson Field for the big ceremonies.
For starters, how about sending a message of love and support that will run on the Jumbotron during Sunday’s big event? Here’s your chance. In keeping with recent BU Commencement tradition, Class of 2021 graduates, family members, and friends can once again share their memories and post photos, congratulations, and good wishes on social media via Tagboard. Using #BU2021, anyone with a public Instagram or Twitter account is able to submit content for consideration, starting on Thursday, May 13, and continuing until 2 pm on Commencement Sunday, May 16. T

It’s a chilly evening in early April. Bundled up in sweaters and sweatshirts, 15 Boston University undergrads sit in a circle on blankets on the grassy BU Beach. Swati Rani’s class, Asians Are People of Color, Race Relations and Writing,
is meeting in person for only the second time this semester.
Kevin Nguyen (CAS’24) explains how Rani has turned their class into a community, despite the pandemic and social distancing. “Having a teacher that’s a little loud and energetic puts that energy into us as well,” he says, glancing at Rani as his classmates nod in agreement.
This year, BU’s annual Senior Breakfast became Senior Brunch.
On Friday, April 30, the Class of 2021 tuned in to the Zoom ceremony to toast one another and officially kick off Commencement 2021 festivities.
And, of course, to find out who this year’s Commencement speaker would be. Because there will be two separate ceremonies on Commencement day, May 16 one for grad students and another for graduating seniors word came that there will be two speakers: US Representative Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.), a trailblazing politician who briefly attended Boston University, will be the speaker at the afternoon undergraduate ceremony, and Noubar Afeyan, cofounder and chairman of Moderna Therapeutics, Inc., will address students at the morning graduate ceremony.

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck last spring, colleges across the country had no idea what its impact would be on class of 2025 admissions. Like many schools, BU was forced to move all interviews and in-person campus tours online. Standardized tests also became optional since so many high schoolers couldn’t access the SAT and ACT tests. And then there was the economic fallout from the pandemic, leading to the largest unemployment since the Depression.
