LUTON: Local elections in Luton have painted a mixed picture. The mixed results come on a bad polling performance for Labour as it retained one seat but lost one to the Liberal Democrats.
Labour’s Umme Ali won the High Town Ward seat with 717 votes. Conservative candidate Shakaina Khan received 327 votes. Other candidates were Green Party’s Lyn Bliss, Lib Dems’ Nigel John Marshall and Communist Party of Britain’s Markus Keaney. The turnout was about 23 per cent of a total electorate of 6,531 with 1,484 total verified votes being cast.
The seat was left vacant since the resignation of councillor Rachel Hopkins, who had become Labour MP for Luton South in 2019. A by-election was due to take place in May 2020 but was postponed due to the coronavirus.

Labour has lost its seat to the Liberal Democrats in a Luton Borough Council by-election.
A vote was held to fill a seat in Round Green ward after councillor Mark Rivers resigned.
Steve Moore received 1,041 votes while Labour candidate Fatima Begum got 910.
Labour retained its seat in the by-election for High Town Ward, which had been prompted by the resignation of councillor Rachel Hopkins, who became Labour MP for Luton South in 2019.

Drinkers hip to the whiskey world might have heard of Sweetens Cove, the Tennessee bourbon brand named after a golf course near Chattanooga and Nashville. It’s booze with a big-name backer in Peyton Manning, but it’s also one with deep Austin ties. The other owners include tennis hall-of-famer Andy Roddick, Tiff’s Treats co-founder Leon Chen, Kendra Scott CEO Tom Nolan, Silicon Labs chairman Nav Sooch and real estate developer Mark Rivers Austinites all. (Nashville musician Drew Holcomb also is on board.) And trailblazing distiller Marianne Eaves blended the company’s second release while living in a trailer in Buda and working out of Austin proper.
