STRATHAM – The Old Town Hall was recently named to the New Hampshire State Register of Historic Places.
Built in 1877 by Stratham resident Hezekiah Leavitt, the Old Town Hall is situated on Portsmouth Avenue in what was then the town center. The distinctive French Second Empire style building was the home of the town’s civic, cultural, and social life for nearly 120 years.
As Stratham’s commercial activity moved further south on Portsmouth Avenue and the former elementary school on Bunker Hill Avenue became the seat of town government, the Old Town Hall moved into private hands. After several decades, the deteriorating building came perilously close to meeting the wrecking ball.
