Reading about this new piece of legislation, I realized that Florida was adopting the same rules that China was imposing on the citizens of Hong Kong. The only difference was the reaction of the citizens. In Hong Kong, a million people took to the streets in protest. Florida held a celebration to commend the Republicans for yet another assault on our Constitution.

February letter of the month
Yet another example of elected officials shrugging off the wishes of their constituents and doing whatever they want. This time they are literally giving away a million gallons of water a day from Floridaâs aquifer. Seven Springs and Nestle will pump, bottle and sell Floridaâs life giving commodity and never pay the state, county or city a penny. If everyone is all about running government like a business, shouldnât they first charge for the product? But instead they are giving it away. These representatives need to represent, or get out of the way for those who will.

Itâs hard without a computer
The most vulnerable residents of Pinellas County â those over the age of 75 â are falling through the cracks in obtaining the COVID-19 vaccinations. And that is unconscionable.
Our 87-year-old neighbor has been isolated alone in her home for nearly a year. Sheâs a delightful, independent woman who could be enjoying a full and rich life were it not for the pandemic. I read with great interest and much consternation both the third interim report regarding Floridaâs mental health system and the
Tampa Bay Times editorial calling for action. In 2000-2001, I chaired a gubernatorial commission on mental health and substance abuse that came to the same conclusions summarized by the grand jury regarding the mental health failing system. We called for a new leadership function to address the fragmentation among the various components of the de facto mental health and substance abuse system.
