Hong Kong demonstrated for freedom, so why didn t Florida?

Hong Kong demonstrated for freedom, so why didn’t Florida? | Letters Here’s what readers are saying in Wednesday’s letters to the editor.     Gov. Ron DeSantis holds a news conference at the Polk County Sheriff s Office in Winter Haven on Monday, surrounded by law enforcement, legislators, and police union representatives, holding up the bill he signed to create tougher penalties for people who participate in violent protests. (Ricardo Ramirez Buxeda/Orlando Sentinel via AP) [ RICARDO RAMIREZ BUXEDA | AP ] Published 50 minutes ago | April 20 Reading about this new piece of legislation, I realized that Florida was adopting the same rules that China was imposing on the citizens of Hong Kong. The only difference was the reaction of the citizens. In Hong Kong, a million people took to the streets in protest. Florida held a celebration to commend the Republicans for yet another assault on our Constitution.

Don t give away our water is letter of the month

‘Don’t give away our water’ is letter of the month | Letters Here’s what readers are saying in Saturday’s letters to the editor.     Divers and swimmers enjoy Ginnie Springs in High Springs in August 2016. [ GAINESVILLE SUN FILE/NEWS-JOURNAL | TNS ] Published Mar. 6 February letter of the month Yet another example of elected officials shrugging off the wishes of their constituents and doing whatever they want. This time they are literally giving away a million gallons of water a day from Florida’s aquifer. Seven Springs and Nestle will pump, bottle and sell Florida’s life giving commodity and never pay the state, county or city a penny. If everyone is all about running government like a business, shouldn’t they first charge for the product? But instead they are giving it away. These representatives need to represent, or get out of the way for those who will.

Try registering for a vaccination without a computer

Try registering for a vaccination without a computer | Letters Here’s what readers are saying in Sunday’s letters to the editor.     A pharmacist with Walgreens Pharmacy prepares a syringe with the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for residents and staff at the The Palace assisted living facility in Coral Gables last month. [ LYNNE SLADKY | AP ] Published Feb. 21 It’s hard without a computer The most vulnerable residents of Pinellas County — those over the age of 75 — are falling through the cracks in obtaining the COVID-19 vaccinations. And that is unconscionable. Our 87-year-old neighbor has been isolated alone in her home for nearly a year. She’s a delightful, independent woman who could be enjoying a full and rich life were it not for the pandemic. But, she doesn’t have a computer so it’s hard to get an appointment for the vaccine. My husband and I offered to go online to get her signed up. We have now tried to get her an ap

Will Florida ever address its mental health crisis

Will Florida ever address its mental health crisis | Letters Here’s what readers are saying in Friday’s letters to the editor.     Students hold their hands in the air as they are evacuated by police from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland in 2018 after a shooter opened fire on the campus. [ MIKE STOCKER | AP ] Published Jan. 1 I read with great interest and much consternation both the third interim report regarding Florida’s mental health system and the Tampa Bay Times editorial calling for action. In 2000-2001, I chaired a gubernatorial commission on mental health and substance abuse that came to the same conclusions summarized by the grand jury regarding the mental health failing system. We called for a new leadership function to address the fragmentation among the various components of the de facto mental health and substance abuse system. My consternation results from our inability to make substantial progress in addressing these issu
