Mark Brouwer presented him on behalf of citizens in the Netherlands on April 17, 2021, at the Army Airborne and Special Operations Museum in Fayetteville. It’s been 76 years since allied forces helped liberate the Netherlands during World War II, but decades later, the appreciation of Dutch citizens continues. Don Bertino, 96, is a local World War II veteran who had a role in liberating the European country. In years past, Bertino has returned to the sites where he fought in the 1940s, but was unable to during this past year because of the global COVID-19 pandemic.
