The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) has become a signatory of The Future of Tourism Coalition with the global mission to place destinations at the centre of recovery strategies.
PATA CEO Mario Hardy said: “While decades of growth before the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic have been celebrated by the travel and tourism industry, it has also placed many destinations at risk – environmentally, culturally, socially, and financially.

“As the industry looks towards recovery, it must realign around a strong set of principles in order to bring about long-term sustainable and equitable growth. We encourage all of our members, partners, and affiliated organisations and businesses to show their support and become part of the movement by joining as a signatory to this initiative.”
He said: “We were more optimistic a few months ago. Now countries around the region are not so optimistic. In Thailand, the restrictions are back on.
“Bangkok is in complete lock down for the next two weeks at least, possibly more, because the number of cases and deaths keep rising.
“Singapore just found a new cluster and is putting restrictions on again. The travel bubble between Singapore and Hong Kong is on and off. India is having a really challenging time and many countries are stopping access to India.
“In Japan, there will not only be no international visitors at the Olympics, now they are saying there won’t be an audience at all.

The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) has endorsed the University of Fiji’s Bachelor of Commerce in Tourism Studies.
PATA – founded in 1951 – is a not-for-profit membership association that acts as a catalyst for the responsible development of travel and tourism to, from and within the Asia Pacific region.
University of Fiji head of the management department Dr Navneel Prasad acknowledged the endorsement saying this was the first regional endorsement for the program.
“This endorsement signifies the quality and standard of the tourism studies program and aligns with the strategic direction of the university to achieve regional and international endorsements and accreditations,” Dr Prasad said.

BANGKOK, 10 days ago The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) has appointed Liz Ortiguera as its next Chief Executive Officer effective May 17, succeeding Dr. Mario Hardy who will finish his term at the end of May. PATA Chair Soon-Hwa Wong said: “We are delighted to welcome Liz to the PATA family, especially as she will be the first Asian American female CEO in PATA’s 70 year history. Her extensive leadership experience across different industries in the Asia Pacific region is what PATA needs to lead the Association to new heights.
