Plans for a mixed-use project proposed for Mariners Mile are hitting the brakes at least until May, so city staff can return before the Newport Beach City Council with answers to questions about parking requirements, density bonuses and compliance of the overall project with the city’s general plan.
The proposed project initially received approval by the Planning Commission in February, but was pulled for further consideration by Mayor Brad Avery in March after Avery said he heard from residents that said they were concerned about the possible impacts of the project, which is one of several major developments expected to come down the line for the 1.3-mile stretch of Pacific Coast Highway.

It’s great news that, as of Saturday, Orange County hospitals had reported seeing a 45% reduction of COVID-19 patients arriving at their doorsteps over the previous two weeks. But the fits and starts of getting the vaccines to as many in the U.S. as possible, a promise most recently hindered by transportation issues caused by last week’s extreme weather conditions across the country’s heart, have been dispiriting to many.

A proposed mixed-use project on Mariners Mile moved closer to fruition after receiving a round of permit approvals from the Newport Beach Planning Commission on Thursday, to the dismay of some concerned residents.
Mariners Mile is a 1.3-mile-long stretch of Pacific Coast Highway between Newport Boulevard and Dover Drive.
The commission approved on a 5-1 vote a resolution that includes a coastal development permit, conditional use permit, site development review and a tentative parcel map. Planning Commission Chair Erik Weigand dissented and Commissioner Lauren Kleiman was absent.
