Minister Charlie McConalogue meets Donegal County Council Fisheries Committee   Today, the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine and Donegal T.D., Charlie McConalogue, met with the Donegal County Council Fisheries Committee. The meeting allowed the Minister to hear at first hand the issues of concern and importance to the fishing sector in Donegal from Donegal County Councillors. The meeting was wide ranging and covered the impacts of the EU/UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement on fisheries, and supports for fishers, opportunities for investment in the industry including on local piers and harbours and Government plans for Marine Spatial planning.

Potential For Renewable Energy Development

The island’s marine Exclusive Economic Zone offers “great potential for renewable energy development,” Minister Walter Roban said, adding that the “most feasible of these technologies is offshore wind” and the “next most feasible technology is floating solar.” Speaking in the House of Assembly, Minister of Home Affairs Walter Roban said, “In June 2019 the Government committed to developing an integrated Marine Spatial Plan for the entirety of the 200 nautical miles of Bermuda’s Exclusive Economic Zone [EEZ]. This includes the inshore and offshore areas. Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council (DLRCoCo) has commissioned a new €100k report into the 200-year-old harbour, asking economic consultants Indecon to provide a blueprint for its improved use. This report s timing couldn t be better because since the cross-channel ferry left in 2015 - after almost 200 continuous years of operation - the harbour and the county s 17-km south Dublin coastline has had an uncertain time.
