Sarasota’s ‘Unconditional Surrender’ statue is moved SARASOTA – A crew of experts from New Jersey-based Seward Johnson Atelier have placed the iconic “Unconditional Surrender sculpture” at its new home along the Bayfront on Thursday. Crews hoisted the 25-foot-tall sculpture by crane onto a flatbed truck and moved it a short distance to its new site along the Bayfront on a swath of parkland between O’Leary’s Tiki Bar & Grill and Marina Jack. Installation is expected to be completed on Friday.  The relocation of “Complexus” – the 70-foot fire engine red sculpture across the street – to its new temporary site at the Sarasota Art Museum is scheduled for Monday.

If spending your retirement in a warm and sunny locale sounds good to you and if you’re planning ahead for those days of leisure you’ll be interested to know that a city in the Sunshine State was just named the best place to retire in America. In fact, in the recently released U.S. News and World Report’s 2020-2021 list of “Best Places to Retire in the U.S.,” Florida metro areas took 13 of the top 25 rankings.  Sarasota came in first place, followed by Fort Myers, Port St. Lucie, and Naples, sweeping the top four spots. Sarasota and Fort Myers dominated the list last year as well, just swapping first and second places in the latest survey. The wide appeal of Sarasota and Naples ranked them in the top 25 in “Best Places to Live in the U.S.” as well as Best Places to Retire.

Ask a person their favorite holiday memory and you re sure to get tales of Santa Claus, delicious food and perhaps even some holiday mishaps. The holidays this year are sure to look a little different as many traditions will have to be adjusted to accommodate for best COVID-19 safety practices, but that doesn t mean the cheer has to stop.  We asked a few Sarasota residents to share their favorite memories of holidays past and how they plan to celebrate the season this year. Although there are tales of roof-built trampolines and snowed-in parents almost missing Christmas, all the memories had one unifying factor: time spent with family. 

Workshop scheduled for Gulfstream Avenue roundabout

Workshop scheduled for Gulfstream Avenue roundabout SARASOTA – One of the most hotly contested and highly anticipated roundabouts in the city of Sarasota is approaching reality.  The Florida Department of Transportation will host a virtual public meeting for the U.S. 41 and Gulfstream Avenue roundabout construction project at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.  Construction is to begin in February. The roundabout is expected to be completed in the fall of 2022. Detours and lane closures will be in place during various phases of the project. Construction will occur during the day and occasionally at night.  Construction costs are still being finalized.  The primary purpose of the project is to convert the existing signalized intersection at U.S. 41 at Gulfstream Avenue to a roundabout that officials say will enhance connectivity and safety.
