‘They Carried Us’ tells the story of Philadelphia’s Black women leaders Valerie Russ, The Philadelphia Inquirer With Octavius V. Catto ‘s statue erected at City Hall, more people know about the extraordinary 19th century African American educator, Pennsylvania National Guard officer, and voting-rights activist who was assassinated on South Street on Election Day 1871. However, the recent book, They Carried Us: The Social Impact of Philadelphia’s Black Women Leaders, tells about Caroline LeCount, an educator and activist in her own right, who was Catto’s fiance. LeCount was a teacher and later the principal of the Ohio Street School , at Lombard Street, near 20th.
