Getting to know your local government Wed, 02/10/2021 - 9:19am admin Who s responsible for what in the City of Charleston, Berkeley County and Daniel Island Charleston  now has one of the highest daily averages of newcomers in the nation, as the Lowcountry city continues to experience a boom in population. Daniel Island and the surrounding area is a popular destination of this newfound growth.   For those unfamiliar with the governmental geography of the Lowcountry, Daniel Island is not a town itself, but rather a master-planned development zoned within the city of Charleston. Adding to the confusion, while Daniel Island and parts of the surrounding areas are part of the city, those areas are not governed by Charleston County. The island and pockets of the Cainhoy area fall under the jurisdiction of the City of Charleston, under Berkeley County and under individual  property owners associations and rules.

After a controversy involving Harry Griffin happened last month, city leaders said they looked at whether council and committee members could be held accountable for their behavior. City Councilmember Carol Jackson said she found out through talking the city’s legal counsel, there is no information pertaining to conduct in their local rules of order.

Charleston leaders approve $234 million budget, property tax increases

Taxes in Charleston will increase next fall. Charleston City Council on Tuesday night gave its second and final approval of the 2021 budget, which includes a $24 to $72 increase in property taxes, depending on the size of the house and whether it is rented out or owner occupied.   In Charleston and Berkeley counties: Tax on a $300,000 owner-occupied home would increase $24 next year. Tax on a $300,000 rented home would increase $36 next year. Tax on a $600,000 owner-occupied home would increase $48 next year. Tax on a $600,000 rented home would increase $72 next year. On Tuesday night, the budget received a second and third approval, each an 8-5 vote. Council members Marie Delcioppo, Kevin Shealy, Karl Brady, Mike Seekings and Harry Griffin opposed the increase.
