3-alarm grass fire in Medford closes Biddle Rd, causes level 1 evacuations

MEDFORD, Ore. A fire in Medford closed down Biddle Road late this afternoon, and tonight firefighters are still mopping up the area. “I was on the other side of the creek next to a cherry tree, and there were maybe 3 or 4 people yelling, fighting talking about lighting the place on fire and maybe 5 minutes later I could smell smoke,” said Matthew Cartmill, a witness to the possible start of Sunday’s fire. He says he believes the fire was human-caused. Shortly after smelling smoke, Cartmill says he saw flames and called 911. He says there was also a small explosion. “It sounded like smaller propane tanks, the area seemed to be an old camping area with lots of debris and garbage,” he said.

Peace and Justice Vigil held for Yreka man killed in officer involved shooting

YREKA, Ca. Hundreds of people gathered in the streets of Yreka this afternoon to demand justice for a man recently killed in an officer-involved shooting by police. 35-year-old Soobleej Kaub Hawj was shot dead by police on June 28th when evacuating from the Lava Fire. “Siskiyou Hmong Americans United 4 Justice’ and Yreka community members came together for a justice vigil and march. They claim Hawj was unjustly murdered. “We are right now facing racism against our community, myself, I am Hmong, all our people here are Hmong people,” said national activist, Paula Yang. She drove up from Fresno, California to demand transparency and an explanation for Hawj’s death.
