The Coachella Valley Unified School District once again appears to be in a serious leadership crisis. But we are not just talking about the abrupt and mysterious resignation of Superintendent Maria Gandera.
CVUSD includes 14 elementary schools, three middle schools and three high schools, and had a total enrollment of 17,887 during 2019-20 school year. It includes more than 100 square miles, covering from Coachella to Thermal, Mecca and the Salton Sea and Oasis areas. Many of these students live below the poverty line, in homes lacking reliable internet. Thousands of these children have struggled for the past year to access classes online and meals provided by the district.
