During Tuesday’s meeting, the board swore in a new member, Area 1 representative Maria Isabel López, and elected Diana Craighead as president of the board for the next year. Board member Doug Otto will serve as vice president for the upcoming year.
Megan Kerr is among the newly elected City Council members who will be sworn into office tonight, when she will officially begin her new role representing Long Beach's 5th District. But before taking over that seat, Kerr had to bid farewell to her place on Long Beach Unified School District’s Board of Education.
While serving on the LBUSD board for 16 years, Smith championed school uniforms, standards-based instruction and other groundbreaking ideas that earned her national recognition.
LBUSD enrollment remains steadily shrinking, with a longtime decline of 2% annually reaching 3% each of the last two years. Each percentage drop represents a loss of $7-8 million in funding from the state.
