When my colleague Margaret Littman gave yâall the heads-up that a new deli was coming to East Nashville to take over the former Marche space, to say that the reaction was overwhelming would be an understatement. In fact, when I showed up last week for a quick preview lunch at Shepâs Delicatessen, I saw that Margaret had beaten me to the punch and was already enjoying her meal at a table in the bright, airy dining room of the deli. That should have been a sign that people couldnât wait to try out Shepâs menu of bagels, breakfast and fun takes on traditional deli fare â a fact that became apparent when I logged onto their website to prepare to write this First Bite.

Photo: Marigold PopcornYou don’t know it, but I did you a favor. I received no fewer than 10 solicitations to cover something at least tangentially associated with National Popcorn Day on Jan. 19, and I didn’t waste your time with any of them. I usually stay pretty far away from those National Fill-in-the-Blank Days since there are so damn many of them, and while they can be fun, they really don’t really mean anything.
So I missed out on the chance to tell y’all about Marigold Gourmet Popcorn, a business that my Bites colleague Margaret Littman mentioned in her profile of a fellow tenant in the new L&L Marketplace on Charlotte. But then they went and tugged on my heartstrings by bringing puppy dogs in on the act.
The National Museum of African American Music Opens Downtown
The new 56,000 sq. ft.-museum will tell the story of Black music in Nashville and beyond.
nd American music are inseparable,â says Tuwisha Rogers-Simpson.
She is the vice president of brand and partnerships for the National Museum of African American Music (NMAAM), which officially opened its doors on Saturday, January 30.Â
âThe story of the city and how it has built itself to get to where it is today is similar to the story of Black music in America. We believe that this is the right city to tell this story,â says Rogers-Simpson.

There’s a mural, painted by Sarah Tate, on the wall at Culture + Co. in L&L Market that reads, “You had me at cheese.” Cheese is my love language, so, “it me,” as the memes say. Culture + Co., one of the newest occupants in the market space, had me as soon as I walked into 3820 Charlotte Ave.
Culture + Co. also had me immediately because the new restaurant, built in the open space of the market, features a retro-inspired marquee hanging above what its owners say is the only cheese conveyor belt in the United States.
