TALLAHASSEE In his first legislative session, state Rep. Patt Maney took on something no other lawmaker has had much luck tackling: a thorough overhaul of statutes governing the Baker and Marchman acts.
The Baker Act, passed in 1971, governs involuntary commitments based on mental health. The Marchman Act, passed in 1993, allows similar action to be taken in cases involving alcohol addiction or substance abuse. These laws have been subject to numerous revisions since their enactments, but their fundamental structure has remained unchanged despite numerous case law and scientific developments, Maney s introduction to House Bill 405 states. This proposal represents the first comprehensive reform of Florida s civil commitment system to reflect these developments.

Suspect escapes from Ocala hospital but is quickly captured
Law enforcement officials captured a woman who escaped from custody while at a local hospital on Wednesday.
The escape temporarily forced the lockdown of three nearby schools and the school district office as authorities searched for the 26-year-old woman.
Ocala police officials said the escapee was apprehended behind a home in the 500 block of Southeast 12th Street. Officers said K-9 units from their agency and the Marion County Sheriff s Office tracked the woman, later identified as Jessica Ann Potter, to the residence.
A convicted felon, Potter was taken to a local hospital for precautionary reasons after her capture on Wednesday. Once she s medically cleared, she will be taken to the Marion County Jail. Her charge is escape. State records show she s on drug probation until November 2024 and has spent time in prison.
