Marathon County to Hold Listening Sessions Regarding American Rescue Plan Funding

By Mike Leischner Marathon County logo. MWC file photo. WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Marathon County residents are encouraged to provide input on what the county’s share of the American Rescue Plan funding should be used for over the next three years. County leaders will hold three listening sessions in early August while also taking online comments on what the money could be used for, as long as the project ideas fit into the allowable criteria. According to the American Rescue Plan guidelines, which were passed last spring, the $26.3 million that Marathon County has received can be used for certain water, sewer, or broadband internet infrastructure projects. It could also be used to replace certain revenues lost due to public health emergencies that stemmed from the pandemic or to cover other expenses brought on by the pandemic.

City, County to Discuss Diversity Efforts Thursday

City, County to Discuss Diversity Efforts Thursday By Mike Leischner Jul 7, 2021 | 2:24 PM WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) Officials have rescheduled a discussion between city and county leaders on joining diversity efforts as the debate of “A Community for All” resolution continues. The document, which has been a lightning rod for controversy among residents, has had numerous revisions since it was first introduced last summer by the county’s Diversity Affairs Commission following the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. It’s original name was “No Place For Hate.” The title later evolved into “A Community for All” with an emphasis on sending a message to marginalized and minority groups that they are welcome to make a living in the county. But some were taken back by the language in the declaration which they said could have opened the door for the redistribution of property or wealth, concerns that those in the county said were unfounded.
