Florida house bills to provide veterans behavioral health care, homelessness assistance Mansur Shaheen | Jan 25, 2021 Share this: Several bills filed this month in the House could have significant impacts on Florida’s health care system, including one that would authorize the Department of Veterans’ Affairs to establish the Florida Veterans’ Care Coordination Program. If established, the program will provide veterans and their families with behavioral health services. The bill, HB 231, was filed by Rep. Ardian Zika on Jan.13. The bill was then referred to the House Local Administration and Veterans Affairs Subcommittee and the Health Care Appropriations Subcommittee on Jan. 22.     The bill will allow the department to contract nonprofits that enter into agreements with the Florida 211 program. Elizabeth Hertel to replace Robert Gordon as MDHHS director Mansur Shaheen | Jan 25, 2021 Share this: Elizabeth Hertel has been appointed as Director of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). Gov. Gretchen Whitmer made the appointment after previous MDHHS director Robert Gordon resigned last week. Hertel previously served as the director of Policy and Planning for the Michigan Department of Community Health. She later joined the MDHHS in 2015 as a senior deputy director for Policy, Planning and Legislative Services.     She graduated from Grand Valley State University in 2000. The COVID-19 pandemic severely hurt a thriving economy and a once best-in-the-nation unemployment rate has ballooned. Legislators discussed the problems the state faces, and potential solutions, at the “Impacts of COVID on the State Budget” panel at the 2021 Hawaii State of Reform conference. .     Beth Giesting, the Director of the Hawaii Budget and Policy Center explained that Hawaii’s general fund is receiving less revenue than usual due to decreased spending and economic activity caused by the pandemic.
