Elizabeth Hertel has been appointed as Director of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). Gov. Gretchen Whitmer made the appointment after previous MDHHS director Robert Gordon resigned last week.
Hertel previously served as the director of Policy and Planning for the Michigan Department of Community Health. She later joined the MDHHS in 2015 as a senior deputy director for Policy, Planning and Legislative Services.
She graduated from Grand Valley State University in 2000. Hertel received an MBA from Michigan State University in 2019.
“Elizabeth Hertel has dedicated her career to protecting Michiganders’ public health, and she is uniquely prepared to lead MDHHS as we continue working together to end the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Gov. Whitmer. “She has served across multiple administrations from both parties and knows how to bring people together to get things done.
