NORTH MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) Ice fishing is a staple of Minnesota winters.
People go to their favorite fishing spots, as they would in the summers, put up a shelter of some kind and fish until their heart’s content.
Ice fishing season is coming to a close and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is asking all anglers to remove their ice fishing shelters for overnights starting March 1.

MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) â The Mankato Loyola boysâ basketball team is ranked sixth in the state, thanks, in part, to the play of senior guard Logan Carlson.
Carlson is averaging nearly 15 points and five assists per game this season.
The multi-sport athlete is doing a bit of everything on the floor for the Crusaders this year while being a leader for the younger players on the team.

MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) Her special adoration for students, 30 years of teaching experience and incredible adaptability over this past year are just some of the reasons why Dianne Johns, of Franklin Elementary School, was nominated for the Golden Apple award.
“She cares about us and wants to always have fun,” said Keegan Beckendorf, a student.
Johns has served as a gym teacher for 30 years, but during the pandemic, she has been reassigned to teach fifth-grade homeroom.

MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) â From sculptures to murals, greater Mankatoâs public art scene adds a vibrant spark to the community.
Another form of art that can be spotted walking around area parks and trails includes signs of poetry.
About 42 signs of poetry, written by community members, are scattered throughout Mankato and North Mankato as part of the Mankato Poetry Walk & Ride project.
âWe were inspired by the city arts sculptures back then. I thought of the poetry group that I was apart of and thought how amazing would it be if we could see the local poets living around Mankato,â Yvonne Cariveau said.

MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is accepting applications for its Increasing Diversity in Environmental Careers program.
The program, which first launched in 2019 and is in its third cohort, creates pathways to environmental careers for underrepresented students, including racial or ethnic minorities, women, or people with disabilities.
Applicants have to be pursuing an undergraduate degree in science, technology, engineering, or math.
What makes this project special is the mentorship opportunities that connect students with professionals in those fields and, ultimately, preparing these students for the next step in their career and future.
