Mirabai opens Manipur s medal account in 36th National Games

Our Correspondent Imphal, Sep. 30 (EMN): Two months after winning India’s first gold medal in the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, Saikhom Mirabai Devi on Friday won the first gold medal for Manipur in the 49kg weightlifting competition at the 36th National Games Gujarat. Her compatriot from the state, Kh Sanjita Chanu, won the silver and Odisha’s Sneha Soren settled for a bronze. Mirabai secured the first position with a total of 107kg as and a 2kg lead over Sanjita. Mirabai secured 191 scores as she comfortably lifted 103kg in clean and jerk in her first attempt while Sanjita and Soren bagged 187 and 169 scores. Mirabai won a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics held last year after the postponement of the Games in 2020 due to COVID-19 outbreak. Veteran Manipur journalist Deven Singh dies aged 75

Our Correspondent Imphal, Sep. 8 (EMN): Nongmaithem Deven Singh, a veteran journalist in Manipur who was popularly known as Khollao Deven, died after a prolonged illness in his ancestral home at Keishampat Leimajam Leikai in Imphal West district. He was 75. Deven Singh survived by his wife and four daughters. He joined the Khollao Daily, a popular newspaper published by the CPI Manipur unit in 1969. He was a founding member of All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) and Manipur Press Club in 1974 and 1975 respectively. He was also the Secretary of CPI Keishamthong Local Committee for several terms after he became a member of CPI in his late sixties. Deven has also worked for popular vernaculars such as Hueiyen Lanpao, Imphal Free Press, an English daily and Matamgi Yakairol besides taking part in other social and sports movement. Imphal West district tops medal tally Our Correspondent Imphal,Aug. 30 (EMN): With 269 medals including 103 gold and 96 silver medals, Imphal West district emerged as the overall team champion of the second edition of the Manipur Olympic Games 2022 with a colourful closing function at the historic Mapal Kangjeibung, world’s oldest living pologround in Imphal. Manipur Youth Affairs Sports minister Govindas Konthoujam and Dr. Th Radheshyam Singh, president of Manipur Olympic Association (MOA) along with Health minister Dr. S Ranjan, Social Welfare minister H Dingo and MLA M Rameshwar were present during the closing function. Our Correspondent Imphal, Aug. 25 (EMN): The Manipur Olympic Association (MOA)is all set to organise the 2nd Manipur Olympic Games 2022 from August 26 to the 30th  involving 34 sports disciplines at 16 venues in Imphal. Manipur Governor La Ganesan and Chief Minister N Biren Singh will attend the opening ceremony of the Games at the Mapal Kangjeibung, world’s oldest living pologround in Imphal on Friday.
