Flooded roads closed in Cork, Kerry as drivers urged to take care Met Éireann forecasts mix of scattered showers and dry spells in coming days Wed, Feb 24, 2021, 09:36 Updated: Wed, Feb 24, 2021, 14:22   Council officials in Cork city and county are this morning waiting for flood waters to recede before they begin an assessment of the damage done to the road network after almost 36 hours of torrential rain led to flooding in many areas. Met Éireann had issued an Orange Rainfall Warning for Cork with forecasts of 80 mm of rain over a 48-hour period from Monday into Wednesday. At 8am today Met Éireann’s Meteorological Station at Cork Airport was reporting 55mm of rain since 8pm on Monday.

Former Mallow Park Hotel cited in Dáil debate over derelict sites

The long-running saga over the future of the former Central Hotel building in Mallow has been cited in the Dáil as a prime example of why urgent changes are needed to the 1990 Derelict Sites act. The issue was raised on the floor of the house by Cork East Labour TD Seán Sherlock, in a motion calling for the act to be amended to give local authorities power to claim back expenses incurred in making buildings that have been empty for long periods of time safe. It called for the introduction of a Bill amending the 1990 Act to give security to local authorities, by way of creating a charge on the land concerned, in relation to the expenses incurred by the local authority in order to give effect to measures which the local authority considers to be necessary in order to prevent the land from becoming, or continuing to be, a derelict site .

Council unveils shortlist of four routes for Mallow Relief Road

A major milestone in the long-running saga of the proposed Mallow Relief Road has been reached, with Cork County Council unveiling the proposed, short-listed routes for the multi-million-Euro project. The authority said it was progressing the scheme within a study area commencing from the existing N72 road - east of Mallow at Carrigpark - and extending to the existing N20 to the north side of the town. Following a public consultation process, and taking into account identified constraints, the authority s Roads Design Office has whittled down the initial 22 possible options to four, taking into account three key criteria: engineering, environment and economy.
