A 10-month-old girl in North Carolinadied after the family’s dogs attacked her while her father briefly stepped away, according to reports.
The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office identified the baby as Malia Scott Winberry.
Deputies responded to a call Tuesday at 8 p.m. after the infant’s father, Scott Winberry, stepped away for a couple of minutes and reportedly returned to find the family’s two dogs attacking his daughter.
Scott, himself a law enforcement officer, was attempting to revive his daughter when deputies arrived, The News & Observer reported.

ABC News reports that her father, Scott Winberry had left her in the house unattended for just a couple of minutes to fix a sprinkler in their lawn when the incident happened. “He just stepped outside to move a sprinkler and the neighbor pulled up talking to him, and not even a couple of minutes passed and he heard the commotion inside the house,” Johnston County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Capt. Danny Johnson said, adding that he “found the baby unresponsive” when he went back inside.

Capt. Jeff Caldwell said in a news release that deputies responding to a report of an animal attack in Willow Spring found Scott Winberry trying to help his injured daughter, Malia Scott Winberry. Deputies learned that family pets had violently attacked Malia and they joined her father s efforts to help until EMS units took over care.
The girl was soon pronounced dead, officials said. Investigators quickly determined that the incident was an accident.
News outlets report that Sheriff Steve Bizzell said the attack happened after the father stepped out of the house to speak with a neighbor.
