It s no secret that fans of Leigh Bardugo s Grishaverse novels live and die by these epic stories, but many of them will also openly acknowledge that the
Shadow and Bone book series fell into an unfortunately common trope most fantasy narratives share it s just way too straight and way too white. Netflix s upcoming adaptation of the novel, however, aims to change that, most notably with the story s lead character, Alina Starkov.
Netflix’s
Shadow and Bone can, at times, feel like an internet fever dream come to life. It stars perennial Tumblr fancast favorite Ben Barnes in a role that readers of Leigh Bardugo’s books have positioned him in at leastas far back as 2013, dripping with charisma with every conflicted look and swish of his oversized cloak. At the helm is Eric Heisserer (
Arrival), who, more than four years ago, tweeted his love of a book he would one day help adapt at the woman who wrote it. It’s full of sizzling chemistry between multiple characters, mutual pining and an assortment of romantic tropes, and fleeting looks that are rife for analyzing in multi-tweet threads.
Jessie Mei Li and Ben Barnes shine in Netflix s
Shadow and Bone, which brings the Grishaverse brilliantly to the screen with
Game of Thrones-style world-building, lush costumes, and thrills aplenty.
With
Shadow and Bone, the new fantasy series set to hit Netflix on Friday, April 23, the mega streamer behind
The Witcher and
Fate: The Winx Saga is continuing on its mission to broaden and expand the groundwork HBO’s
Game of Thrones laid for genre television.
The new show, which is based on the best-selling YA books by Leigh Bardugo and stars Jessie Mei Li, Ben Barnes, Freddy Carter, Archie Renaux, Amita Suman, and Zoë Wanamaker, tells the story of Alina Starkov, a seemingly average young girl who embarks on the quintessential hero’s journey to realizing her true purpose, magical power, and resolve against unfathomable odds and a dastardly villain.
