Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse novels
Shadow and Bone and
Six of Crows saw a pickup from Netflix for development under the
Shadow and Bone title back in 2019. An eight-episode series is in the works based on the novels with Eric Heisserer adapting it and we learned at the end of 2020 that it’s set for an April 23rd, 2021 debut. Now, as we’re just two months from that debut, a full trailer clocking in at nearly three minutes has arrived and it definitely has an engaging and intriguing look about it.

The Shadow Fold is real, and it’s dark as hell. The first full trailer for
Shadow and Bone, the Netflix series based on the books by Leigh Bardugo, is here, and it’s just as impressive and epic as anyone could have wished. It’s a perfect introduction to the series’ world, full of dark and light magic, mysterious powers, and the question of how a humble mapmaker has light for blood.
Shadow and Bone is based on Bardugo’s Grisha Trilogy and Six of Crows duology, though this trailer is largely focused on Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li) as she’s swept into the world of General Kirigan (Ben Barnes) after her powers are revealed during a deadly attack. When creatures within the Shadow Fold threaten the life of her childhood friend Mal Oretsev (Archie Renaux), Alina unwittingly unleashes a “searing” light which brings her to Kirigan’s attention. “You and I are going to change the world,” he purrs to her.
Netflix revealed the first trailer for their new series Shadow and Bone on Friday.
In the action-packed teaser clip for the fantasy epic, Ben Barnes is seen as The Darkling, also known as General Kirigan in the show, who is the charismatic yet menacing leader of Ravka s Second Army.
The trailer opens, however, with its main character Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li), an unassuming mapmaker who discovers a dormant power lies within her when she enters the ominous Fold with her best friend Mal Oretsev (Archie Renaux).

The first photos of
Shadow and Bone, Netflix’s adaptation of Leigh Bardugo’s best-selling Grishaverse books, reveal the main cast in action as well as a glimpse of the fantasy world.
“Think Imperial Russia, not Medieval England, repeating rifles instead of broadswords,” said Bardugo, who also serves as executive producer.
The first set of books centers on Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li), an orphaned mapmaker unaware of her own great power. The land of Ravka is torn in half by the Shadow Fold, a supernatural barrier of tangible darkness, which is slowly destroying the country’s economy and society. Alina, along with her best friend Mal (Archie Renaux), are members of a dispensable army that the Ravkan government sends through the Fold.
