Canada Supports Rapid Housing in Ontario

Today, the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), and Adam Vaughan, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), announced over $75.2 million through its Projects Stream to support the construction of 301 permanent affordable housing units for individuals and families in Ontario, with over half of the units committed to Indigenous peoples, and over one third to women and children.

The COVID-19 crisis has made it clear that affordable housing is key to Canada's recovery as major cities across the country including Vancouver are dealing with the devastating impacts of rising levels of homelessness and housing need.

$57 million for Montreal affordable housing

The federal and Quebec governments are collaborating to provide funding for affordable housing in the City of Montreal, under the Rapid Housing Initiative (RHI) between the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and the City of Montreal. The affordable housing will be built in Côte des Neiges-NDG, the Plateau, Ville St-Pierre (Lachine), Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve and the Sud-Ouest. The announcement was made by Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation Ahmed Hussen, Quebec Lieutenant Pablo Rodriguez, Quebec Municipal Affairs Minister Andrée Laforest, Transport and Montreal Region Minister Chantal Rouleau and Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante. Under the agreement, “$56.8 million in federal funding is being provided to the City of Montreal to support the rapid completion of 12 projects on its territory, representing 263 housing units.”

Government of Canada (CNW Group/Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation) QUEBEC CITY, Jan. 21, 2021 /CNW/ - The Government of Canada, in collaboration with the Government of Quebec, is pleased to announce an agreement under the Rapid Housing Initiative (RHI) between Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and the City of Montréal. As part of this agreement, $56.8 million in federal funding is being provided to the City of Montréal to support the rapid completion of 12 projects on its territory, representing 263 housing units. In addition to supporting the agreement between CMHC and the City of Montréal, the Government of Quebec is committed to funding the rent supplement for certain projects included in this announcement for 20 years. With this assistance, eligible renters will spend only 25% of their income on housing.
