Man gets 8-year jail term for attempted murder

AMMAN The Cassation Court has upheld a December Criminal Court ruling, sentencing a man to eight years in prison after convicting him of attempting to murder a man in Amman in January 2019.
The Criminal Court declared the defendant guilty of striking the victim on the head with an iron bar in Marka neighbourhood on January 30 following “a heated argument” and handed him a 12-year prison term.
However, the court decided to reduce the prison term to eight years because the victim dropped the charges against the defendant.

AMMAN The Court of Cassation has upheld an August State Security Court (SSC) ruling, sentencing three men to 10 years in prison each for plotting subversive acts against security agencies and liquor shops in Zarqa in July 2019.
The defendants were also convicted of promoting Daesh’s ideology through social media to gain more sympathisers and were handed the maximum punishment.
Court documents said the defendants, who were friends, adopted the takfiri ideology in 2016 after monitoring the Daesh group’s activities on social media.

AMMAN The Court of Cassation has upheld an August State Security Court (SSC) ruling, sentencing a man to four years in prison after convicting him of promoting terrorist ideology among Maan residents via social media over the past two years.
The defendant was convicted by the SSC of promoting Daesh ideology by convincing residents in his area that it is “a legitimate group”. He was given a four-year prison term.
Court documents said the defendant started following up on Daesh terror group news in 2014 when one of his friends joined them in Syria.
Man handed 20-year prison term for murdering vegetable vendor

AMMAN The Court of Cassation has upheld a June Criminal Court ruling, sentencing a man to 20 years in prison for murdering a vegetable vendor following a brawl in Zarqa in August 2019.
The Criminal Court declared the defendant, also a street vendor, guilty of murdering the 28-year-old victim following the brawl on August 28, and handed him the maximum sentence.
The victim died of a single fatal stab to the chest, court papers said.
According to court papers, the defendant would often engage in “heated arguments” with the victim over their vegetable carts being located next to each other.
