Maulana Bhashani s daughter Mahmuda Khatun Bhashahi yesterday held a sit-in protest at Tangail Shaheed Minar, bringing allegations of irregularities in the Tangail municipality elections.
Mahmuda s son Mahmudul Haque Shanu was the BNP-nominated candidate in the election.
Alleging that there were widespread irregularities in the municipality elections held on January 30 to ensure ruling Awami League-nominated candidate s victory, she held the sit-in from 7:00pm till around 8:30pm on the Shaheed Minar premises demanding cancellation of the election and calling for a reelection of the Tangail municipality. Mahmudul also accompanied his mother.

Awami League backed candidates won all the five municipalities in Tangail in yesterday s election.
AL-nominated candidate Sirajul Haque Khan Alamgir won the centenary old Tangail municipality election. He bagged 66,617 votes while his rival BNP-backed candidate Mahmudul Haque Shanu bagged 22,900 votes.
AL-candidate and incumbent mayor Masudul Haque Masud was re-elected as the mayor of Bhunapur municipality election defeating his rival BNP candidate Jahangir Hossain.
Salma Akhter was elected as the mayor of Mirzapur municipality election with the AL ticket. She got 12,478 votes while her rival BNP candidate got 2,924 votes.
Clashes in Jhenidah and Rajshahi have already made people wary of the elections.
The Election Commission (EC) is using Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in 29 municipalities and traditional ballot papers in 31.
The EC has been holding the polls in four phases due to the pandemic. Today s will be the second.
The main contest would presumably be between the Awami League and BNP nominees. Other political parties, including the Jatiya Party and Islami Andolan Bangladesh, are also participating in the polls.
EC Senior Secretary Mohammad Alamgir said the EC had taken measures to prevent violence during and after the polls. We asked law enforcers to maintain law and order and to take strict actions against miscreants, he told The Daily Star.

At least 34 people were injured in violence centering upcoming municipality polls in three districts since Tuesday evening.
Besides, police yesterday arrested 23 BNP men in Joypurhat allegedly for holding secret meeting to destabilise law and order situation.
Meanwhile, Awami League (AL) General Secretary Obaidul Quader s younger brother Abdul Quader Mirza yesterday said he did not face any pressure from the party s chief for telling the truth .
In Narayanganj, at least 30 persons were injured in a clash between supporters of two councillor candidates at Tarabo Municipality in Rupganj upazila on Tuesday.
Of the injured, physical conditions of six are critical. They are now receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
