The rapid spread of Covid-19 finally forced the Uddhav Thackeray government to announce lockdown-like restrictions across the state from 8pm on Monday. On weekends, a complete lockdown will be imposed. A state government notification issued late Sunday said all shops except essential services would remain shut till the end of the month, leaving people only Monday to buy non-essential goods this month. Maharashtra’s Covid-19 tally crossed 30 lakh on Sunday with the addition of 57,074 new cases, the highest single-day rise seen so far in the pandemic. Divisional commissioner Saurabh Rao on Sunday said that Pune will continue with the prevailing restrictions till April 9 when the next Covid-19 review meeting under deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar will take place. The total Covid caseload of the state rose to 29.5 lakh on Saturday, and the total fatalities stood at 55,656. The total active cases in the state on Saturday were way ahead of the projections made by the public health department 10 days ago. The number of daily Covid-19 cases hit another peak of 10,827 in the Pune Metropolitan Region on Saturday on the back of the rapid rise in testing, which stayed above 31,000 in the region in the last 24 hours too. Lockdown imposed in Maharashtra s Nagpur in view of surging Covid-19 cases will not continue from April 1. Covid-19 restrictions that were imposed by the district administration will not continue, said Dr Nitin Raut, guardian minister, Nagpur. The state government slashed the rates for RTPCR, rapid antigen and antibody tests further on Wednesday. Now, getting an RT-PCR test in a hospital or a laboratory will cost Rs 600 and home collection Rs800 in Maharashtra. The public health department on Wednesday issued a notification announcing the new rates. From the initial cost of Rs4,500, the price of RT-PCR was brought down to Rs1,600 in September, Rs850 in December and now to Rs600 at a laboratory or a hospital. The home collection rate is Rs 800 now, down from Rs 2,000 in September. The rate for bulk testing has been fixed at Rs 500, a reduction from Rs 700. Stay with TOI for
