Maharashtra Covid-19 lockdown news live: Night curfew, monitoring go for a toss in Nagpur
The rapid spread of Covid-19 finally forced the Uddhav Thackeray government to announce lockdown-like restrictions across the state from 8pm on Monday. On weekends, a complete lockdown will be imposed. A state government notification issued late Sunday said all shops except essential services would remain shut till the end of the month, leaving people only Monday to buy non-essential goods this month. Maharashtra’s Covid-19 tally crossed 30 lakh on Sunday with the addition of 57,074 new cases, the highest single-day rise seen so far in the pandemic. Divisional commissioner Saurabh Rao on Sunday said that Pune will continue with the prevailing restrictions till April 9 when the next Covid-19 review meeting under deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar will take place. The commercial and logistics hub in Maharashtra state will be the first Indian city to go back into a wholesale lockdown since authorities lifted nationwide curbs in June last year.
Officers will be watching traffic to stop unnecessary journeys and checking that most offices and shops, apart from groceries and pharmacies, stay closed, Nagpur police commissioner Amitesh Kumar said.
