Let’s hear it for the Twigs, a force for good in Rochester that’s been so successful it may be taken for granted.
We can start by giving credit to Lois Whitney who started the Twigs as a support group for Rochester City Hospital in 1887.
Two years later, as she lay on her death bed at age 38, Whitney gave this request to a friend:
“Do not lose interest in the Twigs,” she said, “for they may grow to be a power for good.”
Her wish came true, and then some.
The Twigs started small. It was just Whitney and few friends gathering at her house to sew items for the hospital. Then more friends joined them, and they also planned events to support the hospital, which is now Rochester General Hospital.
