The violence erupted on February 8 after the demolition of an "illegal" madrassa. Following the violence, the state government sought more central forces for deployment in Haldwani.
Internet services remained suspended in the town to prevent rumours from spreading through social media platforms. Police patrolled the affected areas as streets wore a deserted look and shops and schools remained shut.
Controversial Hindutva leader and priest Yati Narsinghanand Saraswati has been booked for calling for the demolition of madrasas and the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) on Sunday, 19 September.
