In a circular dated July 7, the Madras HC registry directed that only the portraits of Mahatma Gandhi and Thiruvalluvar should be displayed inside the court premises.
The Tamil Nadu government on Monday conveyed to the Madras High Court Chief Justice "its position that portraits of Dr. BR Ambedkar should not be removed from court premises."
The Madras High Court was without a permanent Chief Justice for the last 10 months and Justice T Raja, who retired last week, had been functioning as the Acting Chief Justice since September, 2022.
