Belleville News-Democrat Madison County Board Chair Kurt Prenzler, a Republican, called for a special meeting Tuesday to consider a new map that would shrink the board districts from 29 to 25. Editor’s note: This story was originally published by the Belleville News-Democrat, a news partner of St. Louis Public Radio. A new redistricting map will be presented to the Madison County Board for approval next week that could reduce the number of its members. County Board Chairman Kurt Prenzler called for a special meeting scheduled for Tuesday to consider the new map that would shrink the board districts from 29 to 25 seats, meaning some board members would lose their seats and some residents would see their representation merged into other districts.

Saturday event features Alton city candidates FacebookTwitterEmail ALTON A candidates rally is planned noon to 1 p.m. Saturday across from Ardent Mills. The event is organized by Lee Barham, a leader in the Madison County Democratic Party. Barham said he’s neutral in the April 6 elections but wants the best candidates to win. Mayoral candidate David Goins has confirmed his participation, as have Rosetta Brown, 4th Ward Alderman candidate, and Steven Kimbrough Sr., city clerk candidate. Barham said candidates will give brief messages at a podium and take questions. “After the election, we have got to come together to get it together for whoever the mayor is going to be,” he said. “We need to rally around our city officials to be able to move forward and it’s going to take all of us.”

If approved the referendum would be placed on the April 6 ballot. Because it is advisory, such a referendum would not require action. The referendum will be “Shall the number of county board members be reduced from the current 29 members following the 2020 Decennial Census?” The meeting is set for 5 p.m. Tuesday and will be held remotely. Residents may listen to the meeting via Twitch at https://www.twitch.tv/madisoncountyil. Comments must be submitted prior to the meeting.
