The last rites of four-time Gujarat chief minister Madhavsinh Solanki, who died on Saturday at the age of 94, were carried out on Sunday. Solanki was external affairs minister in PV Narasimha Rao s cabinet, but he quit his post in March 1992 after being accused of trying to sabotage the investigation in the Bofors case and was never part of any other government again. A close associate of Indira Gandhi, Solanki never opened his mouth on Bofors till his death even as he had to pay a heavy political price for it.

Madhavsinh Solanki, who passed away at the ripe old age of 93 on Saturday, will be remembered for being the precursor to what later came to be known as Mandal politics under V.P. Singhâs prime ministership which sought to empower the other backward classes (OBCs). He became Gujarat’s chief minister after leading the Congress to win 142 assembly seats in 1980, followed by 149 seats in 1985. Keen political watchers attribute Solankiâs success to uniting backward castes, Dalits, Adivasis and Muslims.

Former Union minister and Congress veteran Madhavsinh Solanki, who had served as chief minister of Gujarat on four occasions, was on Sunday cremated with full state honours in Ahmedabad. Solanki (93), a former external affairs minister, died on Saturday at his residence in Gandhinagar.
His son Bharatsinh Solanki, a former Union minister, performed the rituals at a crematorium here after Solanki senior s mortal remains, wrapped in the Tricolour, were brought in a procession from Rajiv Bhavan, the headquarters of the state unit of the Congress. Among the several hundred people who joined the procession were Congress Gujarat in charge Rajeev Satav, state unit party president Amit Chavda and Leader of the Opposition in Assembly Paresh Dhanani.

The 94-year-old leader breathed his last at his residence in Gandhinagar in the morning today.
Taking to Twitter, PM Modi said that Solanki played a key role in Gujarat politics for decades and he will be remembered for his rich service to society. AHMEDABAD: Former Gujarat chief minister and ex-Union minister Madhavsinh Solanki (94) passed away at his residence in Gandhinagar on Saturday.
Solanki, father of Bharatsinh Solanki, former Union minister and former Gujarat Congress two-time president, took his last breath at his Gandhinagar residence. His family members said that in the wee hours of Saturday, he had cardiac arrest, otherwise, he had a normal routine active life.

Born on July 30, 1927, the nonagenarian leader was the chief minister of Gujarat four times and also Union external affairs minister. Under his leadership, the Congress rode to power in the Gujarat assembly in 1985, winning 149 of the 182 seats –- an electoral feat that has not been matched so far.
