Confederate armies were still active in the field, the surrender of the souths most put remaining fighting force effectively ended the civil war. Next, we tour the National Historical park to learn more about the events surrounding that day. This is the oldest building in the village. It was called clover hill before it became Appomattox Courthouse. This was one of the later counties formed. They took price of the four surrounding counties and formed appomattox county in 1845. This county had 18,000 people in it. More than half were slaves working on the tobacco farms. As of 1860, 120 people lived here in Appomattox Courthouse. Folks would stay at the Clover Hill Tavern as they traveled. The courthouse building was built in 1846, may be in 1847. The jail burned and a new one was built across the road. Well, we have watched the armies of grant and lee moving across the virginia landscape from the siege of petersberg, to the surrender at appomattox courthouse, now im going to make a detour. Were going to make a sharp turn south and turn back the clock. Were going back to december of 1864. And were going to follow this man, general William T Sherman and his progress in what he believes and hopes will be his final campaign of the war. Now sherman and grant are pursuing the grand strategy that they formulated in march of 1864 in cincinnati, ohio. The idea was to keep the armies in the east and in the west, the confederate armies so busy that they cannot reinforce each other. And not have a repeat fiasco in the battle of chickamauga. A question about the supplemental the schofield supplement to the surrender terms. How were they received in washington and were they successfully carried out . What i think happened is when they reached washington about a week later, they saw it as an accomplished fact. The most controversial provision would have been letting 1 in 7 confederates keep their weapons. I think they felt that would not be too harmful. I would say that and i did not go into this because i did not have time there was a great deal of furor up north about the terms because secretary stanton had sent his reasons for his approving them to the newark times to the New York Times where they become public knowledge. Sherman was furious and he found out. Amid all of that, the supplemental terms slipped through without much notice. We do know they were approved. Time for another question if anyone has one.
