The Covid-19 pandemic has exposed vulnerabilities and weaknesses of the healthcare system of Pakistan. When the pandemic emerged, the nation was in dire need of developing testing, tracking, and treatment facilities for the sixth largest population.
The National Institute of Virology, established in 2018 in collaboration with the Wuhan Institute of Virology (China), at the International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi, has played a significant role in the national fight against the ongoing pandemic by conducting more than 100,000 coronavirus tests in a few months and many other services.

The UK coronavirus variant responsible for the recent surge in infections across other provinces is now also spreading in Sindh, provincial health minister Dr Azra Pechuho warned Thursday.
We carried out genomic analysis of 22 virus samples from patients out of which 18 were found to be of the UK variant. There were also two cases detected of the variant B1135, the Sindh health minister said.
Comstech signs MoU with Turkish university

ISLAMABAD: The NETKENT Mediterranean Research and Science University, TRNC/Turkey and OIC Ministerial Standing Committee on Scientific & Technological Cooperation Comstech, entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
The MoU was signed by Coordinator General, Comstech, Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary and Rector, NETKENT Mediterranean Research and Science University, Prof. Tayfun Turgay, in an online ceremony.
With this MoU, the NETKENT Mediterranean Research and Science University will be inducted as a member of Comstech Consortium of Excellence (CCOE). CCoE comprises upon leading science technology and engineering academic and research institutions from OIC member states. By now 20 top institutions/universities have become member of CCoE.
COMSTECH provides leadership opportunity to Pakistan in science

Islamabad: Coordinator General, COMSTECH, Professor Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary has said that COMSTECH was providing a leadership opportunity to Pakistan in the Muslim World in the field of science and technology.
Dr. Choudhary was speaking in a meeting with the Federal Secretary, Ministry of Science and Technology, Dr. Arshad Mahmood, during the latter’s visit to the COMSTECH Headquarters.
Dr. Choudhary mentioned the benefits of COMSTECH programmes to Pakistani scientists and institutions in detail.
He welcomed the Secretary at COMSTECH Headquarters and gave him a detailed presentation on COMSTECH establishment, objectives its past programmes, current initiatives and future plans.

The rise in COVID-19 infections and deaths during the third wave is most likely due to the spread of the UK and South African virus variants in Pakistan, a new study has revealed.Â
The study was based on the results of gene sequencing and was conducted by the National Institute of Virology at the University of Karachi.
