There was a gift this Christmas that arrived on my “doorstep,” and that of other local frontline EMS providers, that couldn’t have been more welcome!
Well, OK, it is a two-part “gift. But it was certainly one that prompted smiles that none of us have seen in months I mean literally months!
EMS providers in our area were given the opportunity to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
Both LVHN-Pocono and St. Luke’s Monroe have made the vaccine available to providers that have been facing the coronavirus each day, from day one and as we find out now, even before!
As the vaccine rollouts kick off and the Christmas approaches, COVID-19 continues to strike the commonwealth with unrelenting force.
On Wednesday, the Pennsylvania Department of Health confirmed an additional 9,605 positive cases of COVID-19, bringing the Keystone State’s total count up to 581,156.
As of Tuesday night, 230 new deaths associated with the virus brought the statewide fatality count to 14,442.
Monroe County reported 78 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the running total up to 5,444; Pike noted 17 cases for a total of 1,264.

Cartwright, Casey get COVID-19 vaccine, urge others to do same
U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright, a Democrat from Pennsylvania’s Eighth District, received his first dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine on Friday and recommended that others do the same as it becomes available.
“Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine has been rigorously tested and evaluated over the past year. I’m fully confident that it is safe and effective, and every Northeastern Pennsylvanian can be confident too. I received my first dose yesterday, at the direction of Congress’s attending physician and in line with continuity of government protocols,” Cartwright said in a statement issued Saturday. “As distribution continues, I encourage everyone to make a plan with their primary care provider to get the vaccine as it becomes available.”

COVID-19 vaccinations continue to spread across the commonwealth and into the Poconos as the effort to combat the coronavirus via inoculations gains momentum.
Lehigh Valley Health Network-Pocono received its first shipment of the highly-anticipated Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine on Friday, Dec. 18, and physicians immediately began doling it out to staff members that very day.
Director of Cardiopulmonary Services Francine Rich-Benton was the first to receive her shot, after which she signed the hospital network’s “Doing My Part” poster to show her commitment to fighting the pandemic.
“It was so exciting to be a part of something so big, that we need so desperately,” Rich-Benton said. “It’s a great feeling to motivate family and friends and the community. I wanted to show them this is important, and don’t wait.”
