The 3.5 tonne cupola was barged up the Hatea River and lifted atop the Hundertwasser Art Centre on Friday morning. The gold leaf was chosen because of its durability and, now it has been sealed with an epoxy resin clear coat, it is expected to last 100 years, Drumm said. However, the gold is layered so thinly that any attempt to remove it would render it worthless, she said. The 3.5 tonne, 8m-tall cupola is the last piece of the building’s exterior to be put in place, but Drumm said there is still a lot of interior work to be done before the centre opens in December.
TEARS were shed and celebrations had as the Warrington Guardian Lockdown Heroes awards took place. It was the first time the Guardian has hosted a virtual ceremony, but it was an emotional evening as we presented a total of 10 awards. There was also a surprise special recognition award for Prof Simon Constable, chief executive of Warrington and Halton Hospitals, for his efforts leading his teams through the Covid pandemic.
