HALIFAX A 44-year-old man originally from Val-d’Amour, New Brunswick has been sentenced to 13 years in prison in connection with the homicide of his mother. Charles Alex Maltais appeared in Campbellton Provincial Court on Friday and was sentenced to 13 years in prison for manslaughter, less time served. He was also sentenced to one year in prison for arson, to be served concurrently. RCMP say the charges stem from a house fire on Oct. 22, 2016, on rue Melanson in Val-d Amour, N.B. The body of 71-year-old Lucille Maltais was discovered in the home. Police determined the fire had been deliberately set and the woman’s death was deemed a homicide.

Charles Maltais pleaded guilty to one count of manslaughter and one count of arson in the death of his 71-year-old mother Lucille Maltais.
A 43-year-old man has pleaded guilty this week to manslaughter in the death of his mother four years ago.
Charles Maltais appeared Tuesday in Campbellton provincial court, where he also pleaded guilty to one count of arson.
The Crown says it will not appeal the verdict in the murder trial of the man found not criminally responsible for the deaths of four people in Fredericton in 2018.
Matthew Raymond shot and killed Donnie Robichaud, Bobbie Lee Wright and police constables Sara Burns and Robb Costello outside the apartment building where he lived.
He testified at trial he believed he was defending himself from demons at the time of the shooting. The crown had argued he had planned and was aware his actions were wrong – but say they will not appeal the verdict that found him not criminally responsible.

Police determined the fire had been deliberately set and the woman’s death was deemed a homicide. On May 22, 2019, RCMP in British Columbia arrested 42-year-old Charles Alex Maltais in Richmond, B.C. Police confirmed at that time that he was the son of the victim.
