Communications Minister Paul Fletcher has guaranteed that dating apps won’t be banned under a new law aimed at improving online safety, but platforms could face fines of up to $110,000 if they fail to remove abusive material.
The new Online Safety Bill is all about improving online safety, especially for kids, and shutting down things like violent content, image-based abuse and cyberbullying.
Digital rights experts were worried that under the laws, hook up apps such as Grindr or Tinder could be made unavailable for download.
Minister Fletcher said that won’t happen.
“There is no intention to be banning online dating apps, just as there s no intention to be banning social media services,” he told Hack.
