USF: The inside story of the noose found on campus

USF: The inside story of the noose found on campus April 14, 2021 Symbol of hate leaves many feeling dismayed, fearful by Sanaé Wolfe, contributing writer, SF Foghorn A report of a noose hanging on a balcony in the Loyola Village residence hall was received by USF’s Department of Public Safety (DPS) at around 3 p.m. on March 30.  The student who reported the noose’s presence, who lives in Loyola Village and requested to remain anonymous, said they first discovered it when they decided to spend some time outside on their apartment balcony. Hanging directly across from the student, who is Black, was a noose: a widely recognized symbol of anti-Black racism and terror in the United States.

Highsmith/Buyenlarge/Getty Images The University of San Francisco said Wednesday that it s investigating an alarming situation where a noose was hung outside a dorm in late March. The noose was found hanging from the fourth-floor balcony of the university s Loyola Village on Anza Street on March 30, according to Brianna Johnson, the president of the USF Black Student Union who wrote an open letter to the university administration that was posted on San Francisco Bay View National Black Newspaper. This noose and chair are positioned for the noose to be seen from the courtyard of Loyola Village with the chair in the background, which in historical context is a powerful image of Black bodies on display, Johnson wrote. This is a violent and dangerous act that students were not made aware of until the morning of the following day.

Open letter from the USF Black Student Union to the administration: Noose found displayed from dorm balcony

Open letter from the USF Black Student Union to the administration: Noose found displayed from dorm balcony April 6, 2021 by Brianna Johnson, USF Black Student Union president Again, Black students must come face to face in confronting their traumas at the University of San Francisco. This past year alone we have endured countless acts of racial bias at the hands of USFCA students, faculty and administration and have seen too many instances of racism go undisciplined. These acts of racism have resulted in Black students initiating the Black at USF campaign, where students have shared stories of anti-Black racism occurring on campus.
