By mid March, this coronavirus disease would completely upend life as we know it in Macomb County and around the world. Recently, Macomb Daily writers and editors held a meeting (virtually, of course) to sort out the top 10 news stories of 2020. Not surprisingly, the onset of COVID-19 and all that came with it was voted no. 1. - Advertisement - It was a pretty obvious choice in a year that came with lots of important news, including the disgraced resignation of a longtime Macomb County official, racial unrest, political strife in the county’s largest city and an election that stamped Macomb as a solidly red county with Republicans seizing control of county government.

Loves Furniture to close 9 more Michigan stores Loves Furniture plans to close nine more of its Michigan stores as it struggles to keep many former Art Van Furniture locations in business and stocked with inventory. Loves CEO Mack Peters said Wednesday that the company will be consolidating its footprint after the holidays to 13 stores  12 in Michigan and one outside Toledo. Loves Furniture went into business in late summer with a total of 32 stores in Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania, employing nearly 950 people. Other stores are either closed or slated to close.   Some of the Michigan stores it is shuttering are only about a 10-minute drive from Loves Furniture locations that are staying open, he said.

JCPenney announced its store at 43690 Ford Road will join 14 others nationwide in closing their doors this spring and is an addition to 150 others previously announced to close by the company. Just 4 months after opening their first store in Michigan, in former Art Van Furniture locations, Loves Furniture is closing 13 stores, 10 of which are here in our state. The current Burton location, the only in the Genesee county area, is on the list to be closed. According to Detroit News, the move is part of an overall consolidation plan. “We’ve got stores literally five miles apart,” company CEO Mack Peters told the Detroit News. “With the global pandemic going on and the furniture shortage, we’re having a problem getting goods for our stores to stock all our stores and take care of our customers. We’re reducing our footprint of the number of stores to better serve our customers in the Detroit area.”

Art Van s private equity firm, Dallas-based U.S. Assets, acquired the assets of Art Van Furniture when it shuttered its doors in March after more than 60 years in business.
